Baiwen grew up in Hangzhou, China, before moving to Illinois to pursue a bachelor's degree in environmental science. His early academic training shaped the way he observes the world, with patience, sensitivity, and attention to subtle detail. Over time, that way of seeing evolved into a visual language.
He began his filmmaking journey while he was still in China, where he first discovered the power of moving images as a way to express memory, atmosphere, and human emotion. For more than a decade, Baiwen has explored the world through both digital and medium format analog photography. Drawn to texture, light, and atmosphere, his images often linger on quiet moments that reveal deeper emotional undercurrents.
He later continued his formal study of filmmaking at the School of Cinematic Arts at the University of Southern California. Bridging his scientific background with cinematic storytelling, Baiwen’s work often reflects an intimate relationship between people and their environments. He believes that powerful images do more than accompany stories. They elevate and transform them.
